This paper describes experiences with application of quality management in a real galvanic plant. The system was designed for and implemented in a factory creating super abrasive diamond tools. In that technology, the operational parameters compliance is a very important condition for quality production and its economy. An impact of the human factor on production and its quality represents the main problem. These experiences and the technology requirements lead to a new system development. The hardware and software modules are based on the client-server model on a PC platform. This sophistically designed and developed system allows many functions for the management support. We describe a new system with its main modules, their logic, construction and system benefits for the production and quality management.

The paper deals with a decentralized production control in an Industry 4.0 environment. In such a kind of systems, the capability to deliver a high level of product customization together with reduced response time is crucial to maintain competitiveness and to increase profit. A semi-heterarchical architecture, formed by three levels, in which the first is responsible for meeting business objectives, the second to maintain target system general performances, and the third to tackle operative scheduling problems, is first discussed as a framework for the future implementation in an Industry 4.0 environment. Successively, the problem to model the system form a dynamic point of view is addressed directly at the second architectural level. This paper, in particular, contributes to the semi-heterarchical architecture development, by proposing a first mathematical model of the shop-floor of a such a system, involving the use of the population dynamic modelling. Finally, the results of the first implementation in a simulated environment are reported.

Reports about experiences while designing and implementing a Java based industrial software which enables the (semi)-automatically translation of control programs from one platform to another one. Java had been chosen as the implementation language for this project with respect to the advantages of the object oriented concepts within Java, the reduced implementation effort, the well supported distributed development and the desired software stability. The resulting software framework, designed and implemented by scientists and developer groups in different countries, has already been employed successfully; the project can be regarded as a distinctive success. The paper focuses on the software design, on the implementation experiences, and especially on the crucial choice of the implementation language and environment, which accounts for a significant part of the project's success.

The article describes the approach and the implementation of an equipment based control strategy. Based on a view of subsystems in a production, process or a single machine the control system has to abstract the subunits in an object orientated manner on their methods and properties. The base subunits will run as separated state machines (either on centralized or decentralized control devices) representing themselves to the next control hierarchy level only by said methods and properties. These base subunits form functional subsystems in the same way. Advantages are easy replacement of different base units with the same functionality to the next hierarchy level, high efficiency in construction kit engineering of systems, easy integration of systems to vertical integration attempts - especially in the field of networking and data concentration. The challenge is the implementation on standard industrial PLC systems with a standard industrial EN 61131 like programming language. The example demonstrates the implementation in the most modern test stand for heat meters for the famous German PTB institute, a system with about 1000 physical I/O and measurement points.

Protecting manufacturing control systems from network-based attacks is becoming more important with increasing demand on vertical integration of plant floor and corporate networks. This paper discusses the differences between corporate networks and plant floor networks from a security perspective, and outlines some requirements for the plant floor network security. The challenges for the development of security solutions for automation and control systems are highlighted. Several on-going standardization activities are introduced. A conceptual reference framework for protecting industrial automation and control systems is proposed and features for detection and prevention of network-based attacks are disclosed. This paper ends with the discussion of possible solutions for the existing vulnerability examples.

The existing software for control of alkaline batteries industrial production line of flow-shop type was critically analyzed from the viewpoint of modern control theory of dynamic event systems (DES). The installed software itself was coded in ladder logic in PLC controllers. Two guidelines were followed in this analysis: 1) the minimax algebra solution for timing supervision and construction of exception language; and 2) the formal way for organizing the DES supervisor supremal control language. The results of analysis are reported.

Since tension and looper control is the key to successful operations in the hot strip finishing mill, several multivariable controllers have been proposed for it. These controllers, however, can be applied only after the transient response in the start-up phase of each rolling has settled. This paper presents a new control design method for tension control in the start-up phase. A hybrid system approach is taken to describe the discontinuous dynamics of the system and to optimize the tension and looper trajectories simultaneously throughout the start-up phase. Simulation results are shown to compare the control performance with the conventional ad hoc control.
